@ coachella!

I'm dodgeballing my blog. hahaa. I'm here! And so far it's SWEET! Here's a quick summary of my day thus far:

Aubrey & I flew down this morning, which meant we both had to wake up at the crack of dawn to catch our 8:20 flight, but there are worse times, so it wasn't all thaaat bad, but still (I usually sleep till 8:45 :p). The good news was our flight was super easy & quick, we got our rental car & next thing we know we were on the road.

Ontario was all foggy and then all of a sudden BOOM there was this huge snow covered mountain in front of us. Here I thought we were driving into the super flat desert and wham - big huge mountain. It was surreal!

I had originally thought it would be nice for Aubrey & I to slide into Indio, grab lunch and get settled into our place... but right as we cruised into Palm Springs, Misty called and after her mentioning the exit we would take to get to their place, we happened to right there! So we went for it, and I'm so glad we did. It wasn't that far off the freeway and it's AWESOME. Plus, Ted was broadcasting his Bagel Radio Friday live show from there while we all hung out by the pool drinking mamosas. ROCKSTARS. So ya, needless to say, it was tempting to stay there all day, but we finally pulled ourselves away from the luxxxxury. Except total surprise... getting back to our place (after lunch & grocery shopping) it turns out our place this year is SO much nicer than last year! Our place is sweeeeeet!!! yay!!

Glen showed up shortly after we got here, and we all decided reading, napping & sunning by the pool was in order. The best part was even though it was 4pm or so, it was still so hot out! YAY for Palm Springs heat!

For dinner we picked up Aubrey's Google friend Jason, hit Target quickly (seriously), and then went to dinner at the ever classy Red Robin. POO BURGER! HOUDINI! (inside jokes that made tonite a hilarious kick off to a super fun weekend).

Now we're back here with Jem & Ali (who showed up around 10pm) watching bad TV and waiting for Jason's ride to come grab him. I'm stoked for tomorrow. The first thing I'm going to see is Celebration, whose CD I've fallen in love with lately. Hope they're as good live! :)

change detection

Don't you sometimes wish every page had an RSS feed so you knew when it was updated? I don't even use a RSS reader for the blogs I read (yet... I've just been lazy about importing them all into some kind of reader and/or collecting all their feeds). Right now I just keep them all in a folder & occasionally use the Open in Tabs feature to open them & all and read through them.

However I do use RSS feeds for Flickr photo comments and Haloscan comments, (and a few other random ones) and it's the best ever! But there's some pages that don't have an RSS feed and only get updated really occasionally, so when I stumbled upon this great (free) change detection site, I was stoked! Check it out: ChangeDetection.com

karrie myers is amazing

Karrie & I in Brooklyn, when I was visiting last year

I've known my friend Karrie for almost ten years now, and she never ceases to amaze me. She is fragile and powerful all at the same time. Precious, yet unbreakable. Creative and courageous!

Karrie has been a pretty awesome support, mirror and friend to me over the years. And, to my delight, she started a blog last year, which I feel has helped us grow closer than ever. I now get to enjoy reading (Karrie's an amazing writer, so it really is a joy to read) about what she's working on and how's she's experiencing life. Plus, she's a screenwriter, so the girl can review a movie like no other! :)

I've known Karrie long enough to see her tackle some pretty awesome adventures in her life: Moving to New York, meeting an amazing man (who seriously is the best sweetie I could ever have wished for her!), making a living off of her incredible talent as a writer, her & Wayne buying their own home.... and now she's creating and selling her beautiful handmade jewelry! I love it!

I had read and talked to her about how she was spending more time creating & spending time on the jewelry, but when I saw that she had combined her amazing talent for photography and took such gorgeous photos and put it all together, I was SO impressed! It looks amazing. And your friends, Karrie.... they have so much presence and beauty just radiating from them! AWESOME.

She's awesome and truly amazes and inspires me at every turn. Keep up the great work, sweet girl. You are on fire! xoxo

SXSW feature on IFC

Obviously the first thing I think of when someone points a camera in my face is to stick out my "ROCK!" tongue. ha! Hi Mom!

For those of you who were there you know: that party kicked ass. This video is long, but in it I spot a ton of people I know: Ben Brown (obviously), Buzz (standing right behind me in these shots above), Lane, Helen, Meghan, Amy (thanks for forwarding this to me!), Jonathan, Danny (who quickly became one of my favorite sxswi party pals there and is in a ton of my photos), MJ, Ev and more (too many to name, nor link! :).

Dennis (of Dodgeball) recently posted an awesome SXSW wrap-up on his site that is a must read. He apologized that it's a few weeks late, but personally it was perfect to have it come now & out of the blue take us all back to what an amazing couple days it was!

DJ Dodgeball was responsible for the tunes @ the first (Google) party Monday night, which in addition to the free drinks turned it into a full force dance party. AWESOME! It also kicked off a night that will go down in the record books for SXSW debauchery at it's finest. aaawww yaaaaa. I can't wait 'til next year!

So btw (Dan!), Ali & I went to the Books on Monday night!!

The openers, The Clogs, were guys from the National, but it was all too instrumental slow for me and I wasn't havin' it. Simultaneously some bigger fans weren't havin' it that we were chatting in the back either. :p I've been there (hating people talking through a set I'm trying to listen to), so we quieted down - but boy was I glad when that set was over!

The Books were actually really good. I was afraid I wasn't going to like it at all, but I was pretty entertained the whole time. The performers are sitting down, so we really couldn't see anything but the screen that played visuals to most of their songs. They play guitar, violin, and the occasional banjo or cello, overlaid with sampled sounds, words and discussions. I was happy to have heard so many of their CD's before seeing them live, as it was pretty cool to see it come together with the visuals.

They also played a beautiful cover of Nick Drake's Cello Song. The Books lead singer has a similar voice... it was really, really nice.

Since it was Ali's bday that night, we had met up with Ryan & Gabe (of Sonic Living, who also went to the show with us) for dinner at Pancho's on Polk. I realized it was the first time I'd had a burrito in awhile! Let alone at Pancho's. My ex-ex used to live over near there, so we used to hit Pancho's and Bob's (donuts, yummm) a ton. Anyway, we don't always do pre-show dinner, so that was fun... and worth mentioning because (gasp) there are no photos of it! haha.

(completely random note, and maybe i'm way late on this, because I don't hit this site very often, but allmusic.com revamped their homepage.)

just as I suspected!

Spring 2007 for Mactel Photoshop. I'll be waiting a year till Adobe/Apple work all these upgrades out. I am also predicting (hoping) they come out w/ a Powerbook (err, MacBookPro or whatever - but that name isn't as cool IMO) that's a G5! I have the need for speeeeeed. Especially lately, my system has been chugging. Today's not as bad so far, but the last week has been testing my patience something fierce. I spent a little time yesterday running a few repair programs, so maybe that helped.

I want a lot of new things right now. A new phone, a new camera, a new powerbook (if I had completely disposable income I would totally have upgraded already), a new TiVo Series 2, a new iPod (also waiting for more GB's on this one before I upgrade -but again, if money was coming out my ears I would have at least upgraded to the slimmer 60GB iPod Video).

OK, I'll get back to work now so I can start working towards that whole money out my ears thing. :)

air guitar championships!

Air Guitar Nation: OMG, when this flick comes to SF we are SO there! I heard it's awesome. Here's a trailer. It's in NY next weekend, so if you live there, go check it out!

Awww shit peeps! Check it out - our very own Independent is holding the Air Guitar Championships on May 11th! woohoo! We're so there. You can even sign up as a contestant! Ajax, please say you will. ;)

::::

P.S. Everyone, I changed my site's search functionality today over to the fine services offered by FreeFind.com and it already rules! My old search engine (atomz who became websidestory recently) stopped indexing at 500 pages, so half my site wasn't even able to come up in the results there for awhile, which defeats the purpose of having a search function! So, needless to say I'm stoked to have that fixed now. I don't know if you all use it, but it comes in handy for me considering my blog is my "digital memory". heh. It even has advanced search and this hilarious index, where you can quickly see misspelling, and how many different ways I've spelled everything from "aaarrgg" to "zzzzz"! hahaa!

FYI, for those of you reading this post in the archives, the search box is located in the left column on my homepage.

For the record, I am (still) excited to move over to Wordpress (eventually), as they have a search functionality built in, as well as CATEGORIES!!! I actually found the FreeFind search thing after somehow running into this guy's blog where I saw he craftily has used del.icio.us to create categories on his site. After digging around, I'm pretty sure he did it by following this tutorial: Blogger Categories with Del.icio.us, which you'll see is where I saw the FreeFind search box!

love monkey fans!

Awhile back our crew (Misty, Ted, Hez, Ali & I) all got pretty stoked on a new show called Love Monkey:

"The dramatic comedy [Love Monkey...] looks at life and love through the eyes of a cynical, single, 30-something music scout, premiered on CBS in January. The network ordered eight episodes, but the series was scrapped after three.

VH1 will air the three previously seen shows back-to-back on April 11, starting at 7 p.m. ET. The remaining five installments will air weekly on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. beginning April 18." - MSN
So peeps, as a reminder: Tonite's the first new episode! Sadly it conflicts w/ Scrubs, but my TiVo was smart enough to know it is playing the same episode again at 1am in the morning, so it'll be recording that. yay!

I am stoked to see more of this show! Everyone watch it so it stays on air! :)

kick ass show tomorrow night! (wednesday)

happy birthday hez & ali!!

My two beautiful girlfriends Hez & Ali just celebrated another year of being FABULOUS! We all helped on Saturday night with yummy food, many drinks, tons of friends and lots of laughs! SO much fun!!

About 10 of us had dinner @ the Octavia Lounge first. They had tasty drinks, and it was awesome of them to accomodate us when our group went from 20 to 10, but personally I thought they were pretty slow & disorganized at times. I was the one who booked it because it's so conveniently close, but now I know.. it's a little too pricey & I actually could do w/o listening to jazz at dinner. Especially when you're ready for a rockin night @ the Lucky 13! I'd go back if I was on a date though, cuz then they'd (hopefully) pay, and the jazz in the background might be better for a romantic dinner vs a bunch of indie rock music snobs. haha! That said, it was pretty yummy, which is good for birthdays no matter what!

A HUGE thanks to Misty for being the kick ass birthday party organizer for these two girls! You're so awesome woman, and we are all SO lucky to have you as a friend! xoxo

Can you tell we're having fun? :) Hez, me, Ryan & Misty

All 4 of us go to Paul to get our hair done! we love him!

There are so many great photos up from Saturday night! Here's a directory (haha), let me know if you have any to add!

Hez's official bday was yesterday & Ali's is today! Happy Birthday, girls! I LOVE YOU!!! xoxoxo

Dennis & I @ Cama

at cama
Originally uploaded by yo yo yobst.

On my way home from my awesome date last Saturday night, I got a dodgeball that Dennis had checked in at Cama. I'd never been there, but the address of the place was right on my way home, so I did the "if there's a parking spot" roll of the dice (which obviously there was), and went & surprised him!

I was celebrating my great date, and turns out he was there with Dana & Julia (of GeekRules.com!) celebrating her bday! yay! Happy Birthday, Dana!

I don't get to see Dennis often, as we're pretty big time internet/IM buddies, so it was good to see him (there's a b&w photo of us as well), and Justine even showed up before I left, too. I was glad I stopped by.

Dodgeball actually came in handy for me twice that night! While my date & I were dining @ Sauce (delicious!), Buzz & Cameron checked in a the Rickshaw right around the corner. I had *just* been thinking about having us go there or to Place Pigale, but was wishing I knew who was playing and/or the cover @ the Rickshaw... and wala! I texted Buzz, he said Ming & Ping - which made me remember I'd seen a flyer for the Ming & Ping/Goldchains show - and so the decision was made! Technology is rad. Sign up on Dodgeball if you haven't already!

p.s. Get well soon, Dennis! (he broke his ankle the very next day - sad!)

hello thursday!! or kick ass x 1000!

What a GREAT day!!! To start, my workout this morning was f*in FANTASTIC! Although it's entirely possible that it has everything to do with the fact that it's a beautiful sunny day, I have had workouts like this before & I live for them!!! Where my endorphins absolutely shoot through the roof and I walk out of the gym covered in sweat with a big smile on my face, like I just had the best sex of my life. HELL YES!

Today I did my (standard) cardio for 45 minutes on my favorite elliptical machine (yes, I have a favorite... type, that is. there are different models of elliptical there, and of this one there are only a precious six!), and read my book of the moment: Stylin' w/ CSS. I felt so great sweating my ass off, feeling so strong, and I am to a part in the book where I'm finally learning some really AWESOME core CSS info that will help me kick the tables habit!! wahoooo! I was feeling really inspired and had a ton of ideas flowing.

So I'm all geekin out, feeling great - literally at one time wanting to do the toyota fist into the air with a big YES! - and I get to this paragraph in the book that starts out, totally nonchalantly, "Now is the winter of our ‹div content›." HA!!! As my friend Dan said when I told him, "that's 3 kinds of geek!" Ya, I actually laughed out loud on the machine, it was just placed in there so casually. But besides that line being a Shakespeare line, a book by Steinbeck or in the Van Morrison song, it made me think it's in some Bright Eyes or Deathcab song somewhere. I couldn't find it via google, but do any of you know where or what song I might be thinking of? I might be crazy, it just was something I thought was more familiar to me because of some indie song. hahaa... but it's probably just all too Conor Oberst to not assume he threw it in a song, right? :p

OK, so today's a great day. Great workout, great shower, great scramble, great post! And CUT! Time for coffee & to do some work. byeeee!

nuts are the devil!

but man are they good. especially these cashews. mmmm.

pretty girls make graves have a new one - woohooo!!

i got the new islands album and i'm stoked. i also got several other things, and i'm really enjoying: celebration, the pale pacific and the roger sisters!

my mail program is freaking out.

i had jury duty today. and it's still raining. jury duty + rain = SUCKS.

tonite ali & i went to see jamie lidell. a guy we met there admitted he listens to jam bands. it was all we could do to not crack up. hi, we're indie snobs. sorry, it might not be pretty, but it's true. god help me but i can't relate to people whose musical interest doesn't expand much farther than widespread panic, rusted root, or phish. hech hemm... if you're reading this, sorry... don't be offended, we're just into different sounds dood.

jamie lidell isn't totally my bag either, as he got into "the beats" a little more than I am into - but I DIG his soul/r&b otis redding thing he's got goin on, and the sampling was sweeeeet!! he's charismatic and has a beautiful voice. ali & i agreed it was probably the least amt of instruments we've ever seen on the gamh stage. oh, i take that back - the suicide girls show didn't have any. just skin, baby. aww yaaa. hahhaa.

ok, moving on... did i already say my mail program is freaking out? grrr. it's better than before, but it's having serious issues tonight.

after jamie lidell tonite i went grocery shopping. i have a confession to make: i think i'm addicted to grocery shopping. i'll probably end up like my grandma. continuing to go grocery shopping until there were no more room in her cabinets and she had to stack things on the counters. (this is a true story. but i mean reaaally, you can never have too many crackers in case company comes over!)

ok, i'm not that bad, but with my consuming so many fresh veggies all the time i find myself at the grocery store more often and i don't know... i just feel like this year i've been grocery shopping a helluva lot more than i ever have in my life. i mean, i like it! maybe that's why i'm concerned. haha. i just happen to spend $100-$150 every time i go. THAT'S why i think i'm concerned. but hey, at least i'm eating super healthy! well, except the over indulging on fatty nuts. that's probably not so good. :)

oh, and grocery shopping around midnight is the best.

what else can i blab to you about? i feel like i've been a bad blogger lately. i'm trying to type this whole post in lowercase... which i don't usually do. i end up capitalizing one 'i' and then i get all 'well they should all be capitalized!' and the whole lowercase idea goes down the drain. this time i'm sticking to it!

no, i'm not drunk. but i did have a cup of coffee around 9, and so i'm feeling rather awake. plus i'm high on grocery shopping and fatty cashews. i'm sooo outta control! and on a wednesday night! :p

ok, my killing some time here has not helped the stupid mail situation, so i'll have to just shut down & deal w/ it tomorrow.

i'm sure i have more to tell you. like: i'm a week behind on posting my photos! weird! possibly unprecidented! what's the matter with me?

oh and guess what? the SD500 (camera) is officially not taking flash photos. meaning it's officially going to have to go to elph heaven soon, as i can't imagine it'd be worth fixing... but i suppose i could look into it. anyway, what's a girl to do w/o the ability to snap a zillion photos? not sure... but i'm feeling a little handicap, i gotta say. what's tough is i don't feel like i have the extra dough to spend on that pretty new one i want. taxes bent me over this year pretty big time. it's pretty sad the thought of that turned me on. ha.

no, i'm not drunk.

ok, going to bed now. :)

today is monday, and this is a list:

Things that suck:
- this sucks
- slow internet (will it ever be fast enough for me? :)
- forgetting to grab my ATM card after getting cash on Saturday. Consequently I now have to order a new one, but the worst part is having to change all my subscriptions & such to the new card. I also had the old one memorized, which was convenient! (probably all too convenient :p)
- rain that won't quit. this has caused our basement to be really wet because bernal hill is simply SOAKED and therefore the ground cannot absorb anymore and it comes up through the floor. our dehumidifier down there is working overtime!
- taxes

:::

Things that don't suck:
- All the incredible and inspiring talent @ A.P.E., and getting to spend the day with my awesome friend Darren. He's the best APE buddy ever... we totally can go at eachother's same pace the whole day. yay! It was SO good to see him, too, cuz it'd been awhile!
- this kickass write-up on birdmonster, where they also mention Bagel Radio Ted, who has been awesome help for them getting big. We love them!
- hot dates that leave you wanting more :)
- finishing up a project i've worked so long & hard on! i'm really enjoying my work these days and thankfully am doing a great job at balancing my eating & working out so I can be uberproductive & stay sane at the same time!
- new one added, thanks to glen: this is funny

sunshine: yes!

Today's a new day and it's already so much better, including the fact that it's not pouring and the sun is even out!! Lastnight I took a much needed break and this morning I worked out & I am feeling much better. LOST is getting better again. For awhile I wasn't diggin it - but now I can't wait for the next episode!

Ooh, speaking of new episodes, Six Feet Under Season 5 is out now! It's at the top of my Q.. now I just need to get through the 3 movies I've had laying around for awhile now: Control Room, Live Flesh and Venus Beauty Institute.

Random: the new Extra gum "Cool Watermelon" is awesome!

CSS convo follow up: I also started reading Styling w/ CSS lastnight & it's great so far! yay!

time suck(s)

life is a time suck! i can't even go into it, but let's just say i'm feeling a little frustrated with 'time' lately. i don't like that it takes hours here & there to take care of all the tedious little tasks being a human requires. can't you see that gets in the way from me working & finishing projects and then starting new ones (hech hemm, namely my own)!? blah!

don't listen to me, i'm just being cranky. i mean, really, i'm complaining that i had a dentist appointment when i really want to finish a project. POOR ME.

maybe it's this rain? i think i need to go workout actually. all i know is i feel like I say no to fun things all the time in exchange to do work. which i really, really enjoy, and it's my choice, as i actually often prefer to work! but it sometimes can leave me miffed, like "does everyone else make more time for fun in their lives?" or maybe it's more dumbfounded, like "can i really be expected to get anything accomplished in life when there's only a short time left in each day after sleeping (and other basic maintenance tasks such as bathing, eating, etc)?"

things i have spent stupid amounts of valuable time on lately:
- dentist yearly checkup. ~ 2 hours (parking & travel time included in these)
- obgyn yearly checkup. ~ 2 hours
- figuring out how much money I can afford to put in my IRA for 2005
(gulp, not as much as I'd like after the giganto hunk of taxes i have to pay)
- cleaning my house (I had to forgo my workout that day for the 1.5 hour clean up job instead)
- writing this post

i just wish i had time to do it all! it feels annoying constantly getting to the end of every day with more to do... with to do items unfinished. and it's sure as hell not for a lack of trying - i'm working my ass off over here!

i think i am feeling overwhelmed. and not even really by work... but by things like how many great books i want to read, how many awesome magazines i have all over my house but feel like i'll never get through and when i do, what will i gain? will i bookmark everything that's interesting and actually follow up on them? go to the website, remember the tip, save the recipe, etc. i mean shit! there's so many cool sites and blogs and cartoons and projects and people out there... i'm probably missing so much all by running on my own teeny hamster wheel all day every day!

alright.. so that's pretty much it. i'm cranky & i just had to vent it out. blah!

UPDATE, 10 minutes later: Continuing the conversation with myself...
First of all, I think this has come up today especially because of, what is now a common term in our fast-paced society: INFORMATION OVERLOAD. I went to a bunch of cool websites I had bookmarked, that led me to a bunch of other cool websites and projects and artists and awesome designy stuff, and by the end of it I find myself in a downward spiral of feeling like I'm not doing enough. "Not enough" is the stupidest feeling. I basically just did #1, #5 & #10 on the How to Feel Miserable as an Artist list (thank you keri smith!).

So here's the deal (more talking to myself):
- You are not defined by your accomplishments
- You have plenty of time to be fabulous in life. In fact guess what? YOU ALREADY ARE! (ask misty! haha)
- This (feeling) too will pass.
- You are kicking ass & taking names lately, and just because you're not SUPERHUMAN, doesn't mean you're not doing a great job!
- Life is just as much about the small little tasks we need to do to take care of ourselves, as it is the things we do for friends, family members or clients. I think someone wrote a book on this... Don't sweat the small stuff. :) You have to take care of yourself and it's good you take the time to do so. Ignoring those areas wouldn't help anyone, particularly yourself, in the long run. Stop beating yourself up about it.
- You make time for fun in your life. Working hard and for long hours is a choice. Don't be a victim of your own choices.

Instead of "shoulding" yourself to death (I should do laundry, I should go workout, I should upload my photos, I should fix my calendar, I should redesign my portfolio site, I should blah blah blah), take solace in the fact that you're doing a kick ass job at scheduling your life and getting shit done. You can't do it all in a day, it will always take time. Our days in this life are made up of this and they consist of choices we make. You don't have to read all the books at the same time. You can throw some magazines away or know you don't have to get something out of everything... reading can be a relaxing escape, it doesn't all have to be about productivity.

Bargaining: I will work for 3 more hours tonite, till 11, and then I can watch TiVo or a movie (this is my ultimate relaxation) and CHILL! You deserve it!

learning CSS

So I have been meaning to take some sort of CSS class for awhile now. I use CSS for fonts, background colors, borders, padding, etc, but have yet to go "all CSS" and therefore am still quite reliant on tables in my HTML. I think you can have a happy medium - using CSS and a few tables here & there, but I need to learn CSS better regardless.

At first I thought about taking this class I found being offered downtown... but it's $300 for 1 day, and that just seemed a little steep. Then after talking to my friend Dan about it today, he mentioned Lynda.com. Duh! Why didn't I think of that!?

So I'm thinkin of getting this CD-Rom: Learning CSS 2 w/ Christopher Deutsch Do any of you have it laying around by chance?

Thought it was worth asking, considering the pool of geekyfantastic peeps I know here in SF & such. Plus, recycling is cool. :)

So ya, lemme know if you happen to have it. Thanks in advance!

holy moly

the last couple of days have been so fun! i have roughly 400 photos to sort through from the national/mark eitzel/division day show on thursday, and the foreign born/we are scientists show friday and lastnight's hijack show @ the rickshaw! we've been having a blast & there's a lot to tell, but I'm going to try to get productive for a solid 5 or 6 hours to make some serious progress on this project i'm trying to wrap up - which may mean I sadly don't make it to the 12 galaxies april fashionfest deal, darnit! anyway, work and then i'm going to hop to the gym to move a little, and THEN i'll come back home & actually take some time to sort, post, etc. so stay toooooned!

UPDATE @ 11:30pm: Ok, maybe my posting photos & such won't happen tonite. Turns out I put in a 10 hour workday (I did go to the gym for some quick cardio earlier tonite though - yay!), so I really am wanting to relax and be *off* the computer for a little while before I have to hit the hay. Come to think of it, tomorrow's a really busy day, too - so I'm not sure when I'll get to them. gah! Anyway - eventually they'll be here. Hope you all had a great weekend!!
