So that whole
1 RAM slot dying was a big fat indicator that the logic board wasn't so happy. Yesterday things froze up, so I powered down and went to boot up again, but it wouldn't get past the spinning gear apple screen. So after an hour dealing w/ Apple Care on the phone, I just went for it & hauled my arse downtown to chance it at the Genius Bar. No such luck there either, so it's now officially at the mac doctor getting a new logic board and I'm crossing my fingers they don't have to wipe the drive. However, if they do it's (pretty much) ok because:
- I have been doing regular backups w/ Retrospect every Sunday - so it was just backed up!
- I bought an external drive while I was at the store, so that before they took it I could at least grab my uber important files off of it first (which we were lucky we could even get to!). #1 reason being so that I had them *just in case* the Retrospect backup wasn't good for some reason AND #2 so I could have access to my files via my PC this week. Totally worth the last minute buy on the external drive!
The big things I don't want to ever lose are my Freelance files & my photos!! I've had 3 friends recently lose all their photos due to hard drive crashes and/or theft. I would die!! In fact this new external hard drive might seriously become a backup for my current external drive. haha. a backup for my backup!
I'm also extremely thankful that I wasn't on heavier deadlines yesterday & I was able to break away and handle it. My God, I would have been S-T-R-E-S-S-E-D if I was in the midst of a more hectic week when this all went down.
So, I'm on my PC this week, which has been taking some getting used to - and there's definitely some snags here & there between software versions & fonts that I'm having to deal with... but overall it could have been *so* much worse. So I'm counting my blessings. That said, I can't wait to get my powerbook back!!

Here I was just about to ask you all if anyone knew where I could find some photos (that people may have taken lastnight) of Mars, since it was supposed to be the closest it's ever been - like as big as the moon! Well, turns out
it was a HOAX!! Damn internet! *raises fist*

Inspired by
Cats in Sinks! I would love to have them added to the collection, but I think they're currently getting slammed with that question, so for now they will grace my blog! Go check out all the super cutie kitties in sinks on that sight, though... they're adorable!
Looks like this guy may have had his hand in

For those of you coming from
Ted & Craigs posts about my
show calendar, it needs an update! Sorry!
I promise I will update it over the weekend... pinky swear! In the meantime, check out
Bagel Ted's - and go see some music! :)
The Like Young &
New Black are both out of Chicago and are both coming out w/ new CD's in the next 30-60 days! woohoo!
If & when New Black ever gets their ass(es) to SF, I will personally make sure I have me & 20 friends there. If you like PGMG, you'll dig New Black! Here's their mySpace pages if you want to get the lowdown & listen to a few tracks STAT!

OMG the new
New Pornographers is *so* good!!!!!! I can't stop listening to it. I'm STOKED on their upcoming show! You going?! (I'll be at Tuesday's show!)
Other newly released albums I can't wait to get: Death Cab for Cutie, Rogue Wave, The Lovemakers, Super Furry Animals, Broken Social Scene and John Vanderslice.
Other CD's I just got recently and/or have had for awhile but have recently been stoking me and getting major play around here (hey at least someone is! haha):
- Cloud Cult - Advice from the Happy Hippopotomus (2005) Ted turned me onto them & I turned Steve onto em, and look what happened! :) Anyone who hears them becomes a deeply devoted fan of this incredible band, so what are you waiting for?
- Sufjan Stevens, Illinois (2005) man, I gotta say, this boy's hottness surprises me everytime I see a photo of him. cutie! Oh, and the album. Amazing. It's HEALING, it's so damn good.
- Hockey Night, Keep Guessin' (2005)
- Lansing-Dreiden, The Incomplete Triangle (2004) Wonder what Pitchfork would have said about them if they were from Canada instead. *rolls eyes*
- Oneida, The Wedding (2005)
- Group Sounds, s/t EP (2005) Thanks to my NYC friend Eric. I love "Things Fall Apart"!)
- Scissors for Lefty, Bruno (2005) SfL is an up & coming local band that Ali & I fell in love with at the Mary Timony show. As Ali said, we're offically show-stalking them now. haha!
- Birdmonster - EP (2005) If you live in SF, you must go check them out! HOTT! (ditto here on the show-stalking :)
- The Ponys - Celebration Castle (2005)
I devour music at such a rapid rate, that most of these I got within the last 2-3 weeks. Some others that have been played quite regularly here lately & are definitely worth mentioning: Brendan Benson, Bob Mould (new one), Say Hi to Your Mom, Hail Social, Sam Bisbee, Thunderbirds are Now!, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, The Blow, Smoosh (finally got the full album & love it!), some live Arcade Fire, the new Sleater-Kinney, Superchunk and Wolf Parade (the few tracks that I have, I really like & I want more!).
Of course, if you really want to see what my iTunes is playing... check out my
Audioscrobbler (now Last.fm) page! And if I know you, or you feel it's extremely important we be Last.fm friends, by all means add me already! And if you're not using it yet, and you are my friend, can you please get on it? :)
p.s. the very latest thing I've heard I need to check out is the new album by
The Books. Have you heard it yet?
::::
I can't wait to see this movie:
Thumbsucker For the record, I absolutely LOVE Vince Vaughn. And because undoubtedly he reads my blog, "Vince, will you marry me? (uhh, or just stop by for a quickie?)" hahaa.
This is somewhat
interesting article about music swapping.

Holy cow, am I cranky today.
Yesterday, while lifting (W-shoulders, know em? :) I pinched something between my shoulder blades. I felt it as soon as I did it & stopped doing the exercise. Needless to say, today I woke up in major pain. It's one of those lovely can't turn my head days, you all know the kind. BLAH!
On top of that, I'm having "one of those days" where everything is just testing me. It started before I even got out of bed! I stayed up late working, so I needed to sleep till at least 9 to get 6 hours of sleep, but noooooo. Come 8am I had 3 men working *right* outside my window on the building next to me. Clacking boards against the wall and talking to eachother, sometimes yelling. ug. This might as well all have been happening IN my bedroom, because the windows are so thin. And the most agonizing part is that no pillow on my head/earplugging was helping because their man-voices and wood-thudding was so deep, it was resonating right through. GRRR! And every time I tried to maneuver myself to cover my head or turn over to block the sound & light, my neck was too hurty & keeping me awake! waaaaaah!!!
I threw a full force 3 year old temper tantrum in my kitchen while trying to make myself breakfast, because I couldn't get this one thing to work, and then the zipper open on a freezer bag wouldn't open, and then my microwaving & toaster oven going at the same time blew a fuse. grrrr! When that fuse blows, I have to dig out my entire closet to get through this mini door & walk into this stuffy attic space to flick it back on. Sucks cuz I thought we'd taken care of it last time by switching out the plugs, but obviously not! Such a pain.
Man, what a week.
Tuesday, August 23, 2005
We (Darren, Ali, Hez & I) went & saw the 40 Year Old Virgin lastnight and it was HYSTERICAL!!!! I was laughing so hard at the end, I almost was afraid I wasn't going to be able to stop, and I'd be that red faced, tears streaming down lunatic who can't stop laughing even though the movie ended 45 minutes ago. hahaa! Luckily I pulled it together just in time as we stepped out into the well lit lobby, where I made a b-line to get a napkin to sop up my tears of joy. What a funny movie!!!
:::::
I'm feeling SO much better today. Yesterday plain out sucked!!! It was like 10,000 Mondays all wrapped into one. I literally shed tears at my desk, it was miserable. I wanted so bad to just crawl into a ball and sleep all day... but instead I had to work. So, my substance abuse of choice was not 1, but 2 double shot lattes. Not sure if that helped, but by the end of the day, and after successfully getting a project out the door, I was at least better off than I started earlier in the day.
Some shit went down over the weekend that I don't even feel like giving any kind of energy to, except to say that it sent me on one of those lovely emotional rollercoaster rides that went something like this (be sure to hold up your hands while you read this for the full effect): MAD!!, numb, horribly depressed, and now today - I think I am actually feeling ok. Maybe back to numb a little... but I'm not feeling the need to drink 2 lattes today - so hey! I'm making progress! hahaa.
Besides all that, I'm having a big ol sucky upheaval when it comes to my creativity. Or maybe the emotional (relationship) crap just mixed in with the good ol' fashioned tortured artist within me and made me start really questioning why the fuck I even try to do ANYTHING in my life. gah.
But we all know that's just silly. So I'm going to shelve it all for awhile & revisit when I'm not feeling so damn gloomy.
::::
Speaking of artsy stuff, we had a big sewing/craft salon on Sunday @ Hez's! In attendance: Hez, Mai, Lucia, Jem, Lyne & me! yay! Mai worked on her sock monkey, Lucia knit, I cut out some fabric characters for Lyne to stitch on her bags and then I did a little painting. Lyne did a little sewing, Jem applied a felt flap girl to a shirt, and Hez showed off her new serger. Mid day we all went & ate tasty burrito's on Mission St. Yumm!
::::
I have been working out, and today I finished the book I've been reading:
Home Land by Sam Lipsyte. I didn't really like it.
Next up:
Designing with Web Standards, by
Jeffrey Zeldman. Ya, I know - I can't believe I haven't read it yet either - but now is the time!!!
::::
In other "what willo's bought for herself lately" news, I got myself some
JBL Speakers for my laptop. They're just simple little things (aka nice & cheap!), but I'm pretty stoked on em!! Now when I don't want my music screaming over my living room stereo speakers, I can have them on right here in front of me. wooohoo!

It's a crazed nation we live in when people are dying from stampedes left & right. Pull it together, people! Walk calmly and mind your fellow humans around you. What are you, cows?!
Darren sent me this crazy link this morning (the man is a
plethora of crazy links I tell you!) about this
mad rush to buy cheap iBooks. Maaaan... you gotta read it & watch the slideshow. People are nuts!
:::
Speaking of crazy animals, I took my
kitty to the vet this morning - and OMG does he HATE going to the vet. He's totally the sweetest baby boy in his Mama's arms - but you take him out of his safe little home (by of all worst fates, sticking the poor guy in a small carrier - ya, he hated that.) and in a scary big car, and then into some strange office with a bunch of crazy smells & sounds, all to get poked & jabbed by a stranger... he kinda loses it a little. :( poor guy!
He really is a bit of an extreme case when it comes to the vet's... they have to take him in the back to spare me having to watch what can seem like torturing the poor guy. But I totally understand that's the best route, and I'm very apologetic to them that he's not more "adaptable". haha. They say they're used to it, etc. However, they did recommend next time I request anesthesia, so that they can actually give him a proper physical w/o him hissing and freaking out like a wildebeest.
Today he just had to get some routine shots, but they pretty much couldn't give him a physical at all. I still had to pay for it though because they "tried". Needless to say Kazoo is VERY happy to be back home. He was really lovey with me after he got out of the god forsaken kennel of doom. What a spoiled mama's boy. :)
:::
p.s. how awesome is it that I sent 3 Netflix movies back yesterday (in a 2:30pm mail drop, no less) and I got an email this morning at 9am saying they'd received them! HOT DAMN!
p.s.s. One of the
Bamboozled authors I work with just wrote a great review on the white stripes show that will go live 8/31 so I'll link to it then - but for now, this is a pretty cool
background article on our favorite Whites.

OK, here's a quick, but long overdue update of my life. So here is, basically, my life in photos. Feel free to make up debaucherous details in your head to make it really interesting.
So way back, two Wednesdays ago, Mat, Ali & I went to the Scissors for Lefty/Mary Timony show at the Bottom of the Hill & it was awesome! Scissors for Lefty are REALLY great! They're a local band just starting to play around... Ali & I fell in love with them. Here's
the photo album from that night!
Thursday night I had a taco party redux, that somehow I didn't take ANY photos at. How can we be sure the event really happened!? Hard to say, really. But it was fun, really it was! Kristin & Dave, Chris, Trevor, Lulu, Matt and I all enjoyed some tasty tacos. There's a few photos of Trevor, Lulu & I that we took after the Jonathan Richman show in my
Random August album. So at least we know THAT happened! haha.
:::
Friday night (a week ago) I went out for Hillary's birthday celebration & had one too many tequila shots. And
this album of the night proves it! hahaa. me + kat + tequila = danger danger :)

Kat, (sorry, forgot her name), Hillary (birthday girl), Dave & me @ Doc's Clocks
::::
Saturday morning was kinda crazy cuz I woke up at 6:30am, realizing I left my car @ a meter... so I actually got up (on a few hours of sleep & probably still drunk) and powerwalked my way to my car. Weird! Then I went to Noah's Bagels, got a tasty breakfast bagel, ate it & then came home & went back to bed. HA!
A few hours later I got up, to go met Darren at the Shooting Gallery for this KICK ASS event - a live painting extravaganza:
Wet Paint. It was INCREDIBLE to see all these paintings created before our eyes, by artists/painters we've followed for years. Plus, D & I had some taaaaasty Phó in Little Saigon! Check out
the photos!

Awww yaaaaa... (me w/ darren's sunglasses* on)
*former sunglasses. he just lost em at zeitgeist. sucka.

Hot for Phó

When I got home that afternoon, I went over & hung out w/ Nathan & the kitties for a bit and got
a whole album of incredibly to-die-for-cute photos. I'm a Kitty Photographer to the Stars! :)

Yes, I went to 5 shows last week. Very fun.

Last Wednesday night Ali, Trevor & I hit the Kissing Tigers show. Trevor turned me onto this band back in February & I fell in love with them instantly and bought all their albums. So since then I've been so excited for them to come & play here and they finally did!! They were FANTASTIC live & it was a great night hangin w/ my peeps!

Kissing Tigers RULED!!!
Eric (remember the boy I met in NYC & then saw at du Nord?) happened to be in town, and joined us for the show - and even a mini party afterwards. awww yaaa :)

This last Friday night Misty and a whole crew of her friends & I hit the White Stripes at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. My first time at the Greek AND seeing the White Stripes! It was great to finally see them live - they were great.

Jack White of the White Stripes @ The Greek Theatre
And the *best* part is that the show ended so early, we could still catch the Pony's at Bottom of the Hill! They were AWESOME and it turned out to be a great night!

I finally MOPPED!!!

For those of you who have been to my house in the last few weeks have heard me griping about how I really needed to wash my floors. After the taco party (and any party, really) it needed it.
Well, my taco party was what? 2 1/2 weeks ago now? hahaa. Ya, that's why this is monumental.
For the record:
I hate mopping.But my housecleaner had just come right before my party. So I couldn't necessarily justify having her back a week later. So I tried to reassure myself that actually taking some time to quickly mop my floors probably wouldn't kill me. But my goodness... it was all I could do to not ask my unemployed friends if they wanted to make a quick $20-$30.
I know, I'm such a baby - but guess what?! I DID IT! I didn't always have a housecleaner, but man that is a chore I am so happy to not have to do on a regular basis. Although, I did feel so damn proud of how clean I was making my floors! :) It made me feel like I clean them myself with way more care than
they do. But I think that's just me giving myself a big pat on the back. ha!
Anyway - that's seriously stop the presses news. You heard it here first.

Mat, Ali & I at the Mary Timony/Scissors for Lefty show @ BoTH last week.
I have so many photos to upload & posts to write... but work comes first. Stay tooooned. :)
Monday, August 08, 2005
which is somewhat surprising after the week (and weekend) I had!
I hit 5 shows last week, and in between that had a birthday party & lots of little mini parties. By Sunday morning my body was pretty much punching me for forgetting I'm not 19 anymore. Oh, right!
So I downloaded about 434 photos yesterday, appropriately documenting the last couple days of madness. And suffice to say there's some that won't even get posted... we had that. much. fun. :)
But first, to the gym - where I can remind my 30 year old body, I really am trying to stay healthy amidst my rock & roll nightlife.
Thursday, August 04, 2005
Hey all - I've posted photos from Tuesday's night show at Bottom of the Hill -
check em out!
I caught the tale end of Pidgeon, who I've known about for awhile now and actually really like their recorded stuff. But live they were very loud & screamy. But I didn't care, you know why? Because I had just gotten a tasty burrito & I was eating it at the bar in the very back, with a nice cold beer. It was awesome!
Get Him Eat Him was really good! They all were about 16 years old (minus maybe the lead singer? he coulda been 19). Apparently they've recently been signed to
Absolutely Kosher, so they were pretty stoked on that. Anyway, even though they were all just kids up there I thought they sounded pretty good & it was entertaining to watch. Check out how awesome the lead singer's shirt is:

Get Him Eat Him rocks out @ Bottom of the Hill 8/2/05
ZazzGirl, how bad do you want
that unicorn t-shirt? :)
Ex-boyfriends were great, as always! Their songs are so pop-fantastic, and because I've been listening to them for awhile now it takes everything I can muster to not belt out the lyrics right along with Colin. HA! They were great and it was fun to see John,
Ted,
Anthony,
Jay & Blair!
Again, photos are
here, none of my party peeps though, see how nice it woulda been if there was!? Also no flash shots. Lastnight's show I did, though - coming soon!

Sunday night Ali, Leslie, Misty, Ted (and a number of their friends) all made it out to see Hard-Fi and Hijack the Disco!
As you know, we LOVE the Hijack boys... seriously I'm kinda in love with each & every one of them. Not only are they absolutely amazing musicians, but they've all become good friends that I look forward to hanging out with!
They played a ton of new songs in their set, but it was fun because Ali & Leslie had never seen them (despite hanging out with a few of them at my parties), so it was fun that a few of the songs were new to all 3 of us! I can't wait to get their new album!

Hijack the Disco's Dave (vox/guitar), Trevor (drums) and Mike (vox/bass)
Trevor & Mike were sportin stache's for fun (they grew them for this show & then shaved them off the next morning! ha!), which irked Misty to the hilt, but provided endless fun for them to taunt her with them. hahaa! For the record, I am not anti-stache. Misty, on the other hand, is TOTALLY anti-stache. I'm making you a t-shirt, Misty! hahaa
And while we're on the topic of how we prefer the hair on our men, I just want to say I love mohawks and if you'd consider getting a mohawk for me (and it won't look hideous on you), then I already like you. I'm pro-mohawk!
OK, so we all pretty much chatted through Send for Help's set. I like their music, but I'm there with Misty that they just don't seem to pull me in live. ah well... gave us a chance to talk to the hott & sweaty Hijack boys. haha! Oh, and I got to go into the green room w/ Trevor which (being the fan girl that I am, I get all excited about things like this) makes now makes it Cafe du Nord, Bottom of the Hill & Bimbos that I've seen the backstage/green rooms of. Ya, I know, I'm a dork... but when you love music and shows as much as I do, it's fun to see the *other side*! hahaa.
Hard-Fi went on & impressed us all! They were great! It was incredible how many songs we knew of theirs - thanks to
Ted/Bagel Radio playing them all the time, and having them on his compilations! woohoo!! I actually even thought they'd done a few covers, I knew the songs so well... but now that I listen to them again & look up the songs, I realized they are theirs! I even mentioned this to Ted, and I'm sure he was like "what the HELL is she talking about?!" Hi, I'm a dork. hahaa. Anyway- they were great, you've got to check them out!

Hard-Fi
Here's
all my photos from the evening, and here's
Misty's post & photos, and
Ted has his photos up, too! Ted's photos are much better, because he's not afraid to look like a total pro photographer with his big fat camera. So he goes right up there AND uses the flash! :) I need to remember to at least take a few flash shots... the red light makes it hard to get good ones.
Anyway - it was a blast! Check out both these bands asap. They're awesome.
::::
UPDATE: I almost forgot, I shot 2 vids, too. Sound will be crappy - but I like video's because at least you an see the people moving! :) Here's a
video of Hijack the Disco & a
video of Hard-Fi.
Awesome!
Check it out!I've needed this for so long! :)

Saturday night I had a taco "mini party" at my house! And, with all the lovely bottles of tequila I was given on my birthday, we had some tasty margaritas flowin, too! woohooo!!

Look at me, I made tacos!
Now if that's not enough of a recipe for a fun party - throw in several cases of beer, a few sets of delicious homemade brownies, some Def Leppard & Whitesnake (oh yaa!!) and hats!!!

Trevor & his posse of hott ladies

Taylor, Hez, Willo & Darren strike a pose
Oh & you can't forget the stuffed lemon! What a hit!

Trevor is serious about his love for the lemon, and Ali looks like she's puckering up from the sourness!

Taylor & Hez, havin fun
My friends Dan & Sarah came and it was so fun to have them in mi casa, and party with them again!

Dan, me & Sarah drinkin tasty margaritas!
It was kinda crazy because between Dan, who I know from High School, and Molly Butcher who I grew up with in Steamboat (and now she lives in the east bay) AND Taylor is cousins with another girl I grew up with from Steamboat! Wild!

Me & Molly!
We all had a blast! Thanks to all of you who came out & made it such a fun party! Big thanks to
Hez who came first & helped me get ready for the party - and for
Taylor,
Trevor (kick ass drummer from Hijack the Disco) &
Darren who came early and stayed almost all night making it SOOO fun!! To Lyne for her photo taking madness, and to all the lovely brownie bakers!!
Overall it was SUCH an awesome party!! I even have some HYSTERICAL videos that Taylor took, that will really bring it home...
I'll try to upload & post them today. Here they are! SO FUN! (you can tell we were having a good time, eh? haahhaa!!)
