So btw (Dan!), Ali & I went to the Books on Monday night!!
The openers, The Clogs, were guys from the National, but it was all too instrumental slow for me and I wasn't havin' it. Simultaneously some bigger fans weren't havin' it that we were chatting in the back either. :p I've been there (hating people talking through a set I'm trying to listen to), so we quieted down - but boy was I glad when that set was over!
The Books were actually really good. I was afraid I wasn't going to like it at all, but I was pretty entertained the whole time. The performers are sitting down, so we really couldn't see anything but the screen that played visuals to most of their songs. They play guitar, violin, and the occasional banjo or cello, overlaid with sampled sounds, words and discussions. I was happy to have heard so many of their CD's before seeing them live, as it was pretty cool to see it come together with the visuals.
They also played a beautiful cover of Nick Drake's Cello Song. The Books lead singer has a similar voice... it was really, really nice.
Since it was Ali's bday that night, we had met up with Ryan & Gabe (of Sonic Living, who also went to the show with us) for dinner at Pancho's on Polk. I realized it was the first time I'd had a burrito in awhile! Let alone at Pancho's. My ex-ex used to live over near there, so we used to hit Pancho's and Bob's (donuts, yummm) a ton. Anyway, we don't always do pre-show dinner, so that was fun... and worth mentioning because (gasp) there are no photos of it! haha.
(completely random note, and maybe i'm way late on this, because I don't hit this site very often, but allmusic.com revamped their homepage.)
