seeking geeky blog help

I want to use something like this, but all these words are a jumbly mess to me! Apparently I can set it up to tell me when blogs I read are updated? Very cool... but how!?
I'll look at it again tomorrow after a good night's sleep - but in the meantime if anyone wants to volunteer their brain to tell me how I can use it, lemme know.
I know a lot of you think I'm knee deep in taped-glasses land, but I haven't yet gotten into the full force geekdome if I haven't done this - just you wait! :)
